Similar to its cousin (AF 50mm f/1.8 D) the Nikkor AF 50mm f/1.4 D is a very good performer. At f/1.4 the contrast is a little on the low side and the borders may be a little soft but from f/2.8 & up the performance is really superb. Distortions are detectable in the lab but not really significant enough to be relevant in the real life. CAs are very low and vignetting is a non-issue except at f/1.4 (on APS-C DSLRs). The build quality of the lens is very decent and the AF performance leaves nothing to be desired. READ FULL REVIEW

The Nikon 50mm f/1.4’s most distinctive characteristic among the ones we measured (Sharpness, Chromatic Aberration, Darkening, Distortion) is easily its sharpness. Overall, the Nikon 50mm f/1.4 generally excels at Sharpness, is equal to the field in CA, but is (very) slightly below the others in Shading and Distortion. It is a fine lens that should reward its user with sharp images even in low-light situations. With a street price of about $280, the Nikon 50mm f/1.4 is a very high-quality, fast lens at a relatively affordable price. READ FULLl REVIEW

So in summary, we have a lens which offers a great deal for the money, but is naturally not without its faults. It’s an ideal partner to full-frame DSLRs, especially the D700, but also works well on DX as a short portrait lens. It offers the usual advantages of a prime, i.e. a bright maximum aperture for low light and shallow depth-of-field work, coupled with truly excellent image quality when stopped down; in both regards it offers users capabilities which simply aren’t available from zooms. So despite its age, this old favourite still has much to offer for the modern photographer. READ FULLl REVIEW

This lens is sharpest between f/4 and f/8, but still amazingly sharp wide open at f/1.4. Aside from its unbelievable sharpness, the 50/1.4 has the nicest bokeh among all the Nikkor lens. An image will show a very smooth and subtle background to surround a well-placed subject. Flare is minimal due to the simple optical formula: 7 elements in 6 groups. READ FULLl REVIEW

Of all the lenses to which I have access, my older 50mm f/1.4 AF-D is the one lens I use the most often for most shooting, other than my weird ultra-wide shots made with my other favorite, the 14-24mm. READ FULLl REVIEW
