The Nikkor AF 85mm f/1.8 D was a very boring lens during the tests simply because it showed a exceptional performance in all tested categories. Besides the lab results the lens shows a beautiful bokeh (out-of-focus blur). If I had to name a weakness it may be flare in contra light but it is a minor issue in the otherwise very harmonic package. So if you ´re looking for a portrait lens or a similar application where you would like to isolate an object from its environment this is an ideal lens. Highly recommended! READ FULL REVIEW

The comparison between the 85mm Æ’/1.8 and Æ’/1.4 versions is one of the longest ongoing discussions concerning the Nikon product line. In the final analysis they are dramatically different products, offering results which are difficult to compare. The Æ’/1.8 version offers better corner-to-corner sharpness, but at wider apertures, the Æ’/1.4 offers better central sharpness. In its own right, the 85mm is an excellent lens, offering class-leading performance for chromatic aberration, very low corner shading at wide apertures, and practically no distortion. Sharpness is excellent at Æ’/2.8, only showing a touch of softness when used wide open. For the price, if you need the 85mm focal length, the lens is an excellent option we have no trouble recommending. READ FULL REVIEW

Non-rotating front filter ring suits this lens to circular polarizers, macro ringlights, and other front-mounting accessories. With the 3-foot close-focus distance and f/1.8 maximum aperture, the lens is a natural for tight, selective-focus portraits. Minimum aperture of f/16 may prove a limitation for situations requiring maximum depth-of-field. Overall, an excellent, even brilliant, optic. READ FULL REVIEW

This is a lens to get if you don’t have an 80-200/2.8 zoom. The zoom tends to be as sharp and almost as fast, so they tend to overlap in capability. At only $400 or less brand-new this is a magnificent lens on all fronts. It sold for only about $320 in 2004. READ FULL REVIEW
