The Canon EF 28-200mm f/3.5-5.6 USM Lens holds a wide focal length range in a compact and inexpensive package. Overall, the Canon EF 28-200mm f/3.5-5.6 USM Lens’ build quality is mediocre. It sports a metal lens mount like the best, but the rest of the lens is just average for a consumer grade lens. For its size, the Canon EF 28-200mm f/3.5-5.6 USM Lens is relatively heavy. It feels short, fat and hefty. It is not a heavy lens, but heavy for its compact size. Overall, the Canon EF 28-200mm f/3.5-5.6 USM Lens optically disappoints. If you can use f/8 for most of your applications and can live with its optical flaws, the 28-200 might make a decent and economical one lens solution for you. Otherwise, I highly recommend looking at one of my other recommended general purpose lenses as better choices for optical quality. READ FULL REVIEW

The EF 28-200mm f/3.5-5.6 USM lens works surprisingly well. The range of 18mm to 55mm on an APS-C DSLR corresponds to the range of 29mm to 88mm on a full frame camera in terms of the angle of view. At 18mm (effective 29mm) the view is wide enough for landscape work, while at 55mm (effective 88mm) it is long enough to make the lens suitable for portraits (though the f/5.6 aperture is somewhat limiting). It is quite useful as a “general purpose” lens for casual travel photography. It’s small and light enough to not be a burden to carry around and with a lightweight Digital Rebel XSi body, it makes a very portable camera system. Overall, I’d certainly recommend getting this lens as part of the kit if you’re buying a Rebel XSi. There’s nothing else in the price range that can match it. The only reason not to buy it would be if you already have a lens like the EF-S 17-85/3.5-5.6 IS, the EF 17-40/4L or the EF-S 17-55/2.8 IS. Even if you already have the non-IS version of the 18-55 kit lens, it would be worth $100 to get the version with IS READ FULL REVIEW

Not optically up to usual Canon standards or those of other 28-200mm brands and rather large. But quietness of operation and remarkable close focusing at small apertures, particularly at 135mm are admirable. READ FULL REVIEW
