The Sigma AF 70-200mm f/2.8 EX HSM APO DG macro is pretty impressive large aperture tele zoom lens. The resolution figures are on a very good to excellent level and neither distortions, vignetting nor CAs are really field relevant on an APS-C DSLR. The bokeh (out-of-focus blur) is pretty smooth and buttery – certainly an important aspect here. The mechanical quality of the lens is excellent and the HSM AF drive is both fast and near silent. As such it is a viable alternative to the Nikkor AF 80-200mm f/2.8 ED (or the Canon EF 70-200m f/2.8 USM L) although not necessarily a superior choice. READ FULL REVIEW

Photo Zone (Canon Mount Tested)
The Sigma AF 70-200mm f/2.8 EX APO HSM DG proved to be a worthy although not stellar representative of its league with quite high performance figures in most categories. At 70mm and 135mm easily matched and even excelled the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 USM L whereas it was somewhat worse at 200mm except at medium aperture settings. Both distortions as well as vignetting are nothing to worry about. The build quality is very impressive. The lens has been discontinued in the meanwhile. READ FULL REVIEW

While we’ve tested only a few lenses in its focal length/aperture range, we can say that the Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 competes very strongly against them. It’s a well-built, smoothly-operating, sharp, low-distortion lens. At a street price of roughly $800, it’s not cheap, but for the price delivers a lot of capability, and good-quality images.
