The Micro-Nikkor AF 105mm f/2.8 D may be a relatively old lens but it is still capable to deliver excellent results. Optically it is a near-flawless lens with high resolution figures, low vignetting, low CAs and non-existent distortions. The mechanical quality is very high but it also feels a little dated here with its independent AF-MF switch. Typical for most macro lenses it also suffers from a relatively slow AF speed. The new Micro-Nikkor AF-S 105mm f/2.8 ED VR has been improved in both respects (with VR on top) and regarding its similar price tag there’re probably few reasons left to prefer the classic lens. Nonetheless it is still a very fine lens. READ FULL REVIEW

Picking up a Nikon 300mm f/2.8 for the first time was certainly a humbling experience. This lens was not only large in physical size, it was heavy! Considering the larger 500mm and 600mm super telephotos have only one more lens element in roughly half again the overall length surely indicates this 300mm f/2.8 is one optically packed powerhouse. Would I recommend this new “II” for someone looking for a 300mm f/2.8 high-performance lens? Absolutely, and without reservations. READ FULL REVIEW

Nikon 135mm f/2 D DC AF Review Round-Up

The DC-Nikkor AF 135mm f/2 D is a very high quality, versatile tele lens. The resolution figures are excellent when using the Nikkor as a conventional lens. The Defocus Control (DC) feature gives you superior control over background and foreground blur – some portrait and still-life photographers will certainly desire such a detailed controlled over the bokeh (the out-of-focus blur) although it requires quite a bit of experience to master it. Vignetting, distortions and lateral CAs are very low and nothing to worry about in the field. The build quality of the lens is excellent whereas the AF (relying on the slotted drive screw) is a bit dated by now. Similar to its shorter cousin the DC-Nikkor 135mm f/2D has one major drawback – its price tag at around 1200 €/US$. READ FULL REVIEW

Released back in ’93 the Micro-Nikkor AF 60mm f/2.8 D is a relatively old design but it can still deliver excellent results. The resolution figures are excellent and both vignetting and distortions are nothing to worry about. CAs are a little on the high side for a fix-focal lens though (correctable). The mechanical quality is very good and it’s fun to handle the lens. A great macro lens and even a worthy replacement for a standard lens unless you require ultra-large aperture settings. It was a joy to test drive the AF 180mm f/2.8 IF-ED – it’s one of those lenses that harmonized perfectly with the camera. The resolution is generally excellent. Distortions and vignetting are not field relevant. Lateral CAs are well controlled although you may spot purple fringing at times. During the field tests the lens was also capable of delivering outstanding contrast and a nice bokeh (with a bit of bokeh fringing). READ FULL REVIEW

Typical for older manual focus lenses the Nikkor Ai-S 28mm f/2 comes with an exceptional build quality and super smooth focusing – most of today’s lenses feel cheap in comparison and the glory doesn’t stop here. At medium aperture settings the lens is capable to produce some of the highest resolution figures tested to date. At f/2 the results are somewhat softer regarding both border resolution and contrast. Distortions and vignetting are quite well controlled whereas CAs could be a little lower at f/8. (more…)

The Nikkor Ai-P 45mm f/2.8 may be a cute lens but it is also a very serious performer with very high resolution, marginal distortions, moderate CAs and quite well-controlled vignetting. The build quality is very good. The problem may be that today it represents an answer to a question which was asked long ago. f/2.8 is not exactly fast for a normal lens so the more common f/1.4 and f/1.8 variants tend to make more sense … at lesser costs. So at the end of the day the meaning of the lens lies in its extremely small form factor. But damn, it is so cute.   Read Full Review

Photo Review

Nikon’s PC-E Micro Nikkor 45mm f/2.8D ED lens is the latest in a series of perspective control (PC) lenses that have been produced by the company over many years. Imatest showed overall performance to be very good when the lens was in its neutral position (we were unable to test the lens in either tilt or shift positions). The lens suffered from slight edge softening but it was not enough to create issues for most photographers. READ FULL REVIEW

Nikon 28mm f/1.4 D AF Review Round-Up

Regarding the obvious centering defect it is difficult to find a verdict for the Nikkor AF 28mm f/1.4D. Assuming a valid sample the performance should be great when stopped down a little. Even in its less than perfect state the tested sample performed better than the AF 28mm f/2.8. CAs, vignetting and distortions are very well controlled for a lens in this class. The build quality is superb. It is a pity that the lens has been discontinued – more so because Nikon does not offer any replacement nor any other ultra-fast wide-angle fix-focal AF lens.
